PERSONNEL POSITION DESCRIPTION

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I. Position Summary

The Executive Director is accountable for the results of Board policies which have been delegated to s/he by decision of the Board of Directors and shall support the agency’s mission, adhere to its values, maintain the confidential nature of the agency’s services and perform the duties of the position in a professional manner. The position is a 40-hour per week exempt position which is supervised by the President of the Board of Directors. The Executive Director shall be an employee at will and shall serve at the pleasure of the Board of Directors.

II. Primary Duties and Responsibilities of this Position

A. Program: The Executive Director organizes the services of Palmetto Place Children’s Emergency Shelter and coordinates the work of Board and staff in assuring that the focus of programming is directed toward the agency’s mission.

B. Personnel: The Executive Director, either directly or by delegation, employs, directs, and discharges staff and volunteers, provides for their supervision, training, and evaluation, and gives professional leadership toward the agency mission.

C. Finance: The Executive Director is responsible for the preparation of an annual budget preparing justification and/or reports as required by funding and/or licensing agencies, expending the funds as planned or recommending necessary revisions to the Board, and familiar and knowledgeable with daily financial operations. S/he keeps the Board informed of the agency’s financial status.

D. Equipment and Buildings: The Executive Director, through management and planning oversees the maintenance of facilities and equipment. S/he oversees the efficient use of supplies and utilities. S/he directs daily operation to be in compliance with health, safety, and fire code and funding/regulatory agency standards.

E. Public Relations/Community Liaison: The Executive Director supports and oversees the Development Director to ensure Palmetto Place Children’s Emergency Shelter is represented professionally in the community. The Executive Director interprets its services to the community. S/he maintains working relationships with other public and non-profit agencies. S/he responds to the educational needs of the community by publicly speaking to church, civic, school or other groups as requested by the Development Director. S/he responds to inquiries from the press or other media. S/he formulates, with the board, Development Director and other volunteers, strategies for income development from a variety of private and public funding sources.

F. Liaison with the Board: The Executive Director is the primary link between the Board of Directors and the program services provided in meeting the mission of Palmetto Place Children’s Emergency Shelter. S/he is responsible for the effective and efficient implementation of Board policies as delegated. S/he provides staff input to Board deliberations on policy development, serves as a resource to the Board in the implementation of policies, and maintains an optimal relationship with the Board of Directors. S/he reports fully to the Board of Directors on the implementation of Board policies, and provides professional consultation and assistance in planning and development of Palmetto Place Children’s Emergency Shelter. The Executive Director serves as staff liaison to Board Committees and participates with the President of the Board on the selection of committee chairs and members. S/he communicates to the President of the Board on operational and/or Board concerns and issues, participates in Board meetings, establish the meeting agenda, and keeps Board members abreast of the overall mission, goals, and objectives.

III. Secondary Duties and Responsibility of this Position

The Executive Director will perform other related duties as required by the President of the Board of Directors.

IV. Required Qualifications

Master’s or Doctor of Philosophy degree in social work, or other related areas of study and one year of successful experience working in the management or supervision of child care personnel, a child care program and/or a closely related field; or Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in the management of supervision of child care personnel. Closely related fields accepted in meeting these qualifications include social work; counseling and teaching; relate knowledge of healthy child development, violence and/or substance abuse, staff development methods and appropriate strategies for reducing at-risk behavior; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse populations within the schools and with community agencies and organizations; and ability to understand, to enjoy, to be comfortable with children and serve as a role model.
