ABOUT THE SC CRIME VICTIMS’ MEMORIAL GARDEN
AND PATH OF REMEMBRANCE
The
City of Columbia, South Carolina has allocated a space in downtown
Columbia at Riverfront Park for the new
Crime Victims’ Memorial
Garden & Path of Remembrance.
There has long been a need for a site for reflection and contemplation, to
remember individual crime victims, and to honor the thousands of crime
victims throughout our state. It is located at the little Red School
House horseshoe area This space adjoins the parking lot for Riverfront
Park. This is a collaborative effort between the City of Columbia
& The SC Crime
Victims’ Council
(SCCVC-501 (C) (3)).
This
opportunity to have a permanent memorial and “path of remembrance” to
honor crime victims is an unprecedented opportunity for victims and
citizens to have a beautiful, well-located area in which to reflect and
find peace. The chaos that surrounds the tragedy of crime needs a special
harbor of tranquility for those whose lives have been shattered.
Citizens, crime victims
and survivors may participate in remembering individuals, an entity (such
as a law enforcement department) or making a donation to the upkeep of
this beautiful space by:
- Completing the
attached form, indicating
whether they are choosing to purchase an engraved brick paver, a bench, a
tree or making a donation
Mailing
a check made payable to The SC Crime Victims’ Council / 1900 Broad River
Road / Columbia, SC 29210-7047
This new Garden will be
used as a gathering spot for the celebration vigil of Victims’ Rights Week
each year in April or May, a remembrance location for all crime victim
organizations such as the SC Coalition Against Domestic Violence & Sexual
Assault, Missing & Exploited Children of SC, MADD of SC, etc. and a place
for news media events involving crime victims.
